Flick Software helps make the internet

accessible for the disabled children

In partnership with the University of Toronto, Flick Software is proud to announce the completion of the first phase of a project that will see the lives of children with disabilities improved. Bloorview Kids Rehab is Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The hospital assesses and treats children born with disabilities and special needs and those who acquire disabilities through serious illness or accidents.

Non-verbal patients at Bloorview are using the currently available technology to communicate which is large, cumbersome and cost-prohibitive. The children rely on a large piece of equipment that is wheeled into the room and plugged into the wall requiring them to switch a handle back and forth to communicate messages to people around them.  The University of Toronto saw an opportunity to further increase accessibility for the children using mobile devices. They called on Flick Software, experts in helping companies move applications to wireless handheld devices. The result is a trial of a significantly less expensive, smaller, more manageable device with which the patients can access the internet.

This project was made possible by a grant from the government and in-kind development from Flick Software.
