Note from Jason Flick
Even as PDAs are ubiquitous in the corporate environment, vendors still see many
opportunities to bring handheld devices further into the enterprise.
Handheld computers, most often loaded with the default mobile office suite,
are making inroads with people who spend more than a quarter of their time on
the road, and executives. To quote Marwan Al-Najjar, Marketing Manager
for HP Canada: "This is just the end of chapter one of the adoption cycle".
He furthers says that the next chapter of adoption is going to be around what he
calls the "multimedia clipboard". I see a similar trend with projects over the
past year, which has seen handhelds used for uncharted territory such as surveillance and
on-site orientation and edutainment.
This week’s articles show some good examples of this both in new hardware
and new software solutions. In general what people are finding is that
if they can get information to others in a short period of time, it is absolutely
fundamental to how they do business.

of an HTC phone - some websites have suggested 'Feeler', but that shipped in
2004. It's more likely to be HTC's 'Tornado', or a
version of it, as this has yet to go on sale.

Phone Tap: How's the Traffic?
Associated Press
Jefferson City, Missouri - Driving to work, you notice the traffic beginning
to slow. And because you have your cell phone on, the government senses the
delay, too. A congestion alert is issued, automatically updating electronic road
signs and websites and dispatching text messages to mobile phones and auto
dashboards.
In what would be the largest project of its kind, the Missouri Department of
Transportation is finalizing a contract to monitor thousands of cell phones,
using their movements to map real-time traffic conditions statewide on all 5,500
miles of major roads. It's just one of a number of initiatives to more
intelligently manage traffic flow through wireless data collection.

New wireless-threat Web site
December 5, 2005
By John Cox
A new public database has been formed
to coordinate information on wireless vulnerabilities and exploits.
The Wireless Vulnerabilities and Exploits database catalogs security threats
for any kind of wireless net, including 802.11, Bluetooth, VoIP over WLAN, RFID,
and the various cellular networks.
Using a simple Web form,
anyone can submit to the group's editorial board a suspected wireless exploit or
vulnerability. A subset of the board makes a preliminary review and can accept
the submission as a "candidate," posting it on the Website with a unique name.
After a review by the full board, the submission becomes an official entry on
the Website, classified by type such as denial of service, or cryptographic,
with the name of the contributor and other details.

Flash or HDD? That's the Question
December 5, 2005
The tightening competition between NDD flash memory and hard disk drive memory in the consumer
electronics space should result in plenty of opportunity for both storage
formats, according to IDC.
To use NAND flash memory or miniature hard disk drives (HDDs)?
That is the question many gadget makers ask themselves when designing a
new product today.
According to analyst firm IDC, the storage competition in the
consumer electronics market will heat up as the price disparity between the NAND
