Note from Jason Flick
May has been an exciting month for Handheld devices. We have seen the launch of Microsoft’s new
“Windows Mobile 5.0” which technically is their third major release, and where
Microsoft historically gets it all right. Microsoft has yet to make a profit on any of the previous releases,
losing over $100 million each year. With this version they seem to have addressed many of the major issues we hear from
our customers. Also this version merges the varied flavours that have branched off this variant of Windows CE such as
Pocket PC 2003, and the Smartphone edition. You will see links in this month’s newsletter to much more information on
Microsoft’s continued growth into this handheld space.
Also this month Palm Source announced it will
re-brand back to just Palm and expand its hardware support. You will see a number of other interesting
articles and we encourage you to send us your feedback on the newsletter. If you have any handheld
questions please send them to us and we’ll answer them and post the replies in our future newsletters.

Cheers,
Jason Flick, President Flick Software

Mobile Devices: Business Enabler or Security Risk?
By Nick Galletto
May 31, 2005
Mobile devices such as smart phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and
Blackberries are integrated into our day-to-day business life; however, the
secure use of these devices is not viewed as a top priority in today's business
community. Policies and procedures often do not cover them, and in
fact in most cases the units have not been formally
adopted by the business. Because these tools provide a convenient means to
communicate anytime from anywhere, issues relating to security are often
overlooked.
