Note from Jason Flick

It's well known that Research In Motion (RIM) plans to extend multimedia capabilities to it’s BlackBerry wireless handhelds, in fact you even see big strides in it's current models. Meanwhile, there have been constant rumours about Apple developing a phone: It registered the mobile-handset-friendly trademark phrase "Mobile Me" in January, for example.
The rumour has quickly resulted into what the industry has termed an "AppleBerry". (Motorola internally nicknamed the "Q" – it’s new BlackBerry-like Windows Mobile device RAZRBerry.) The primary source of the rumoured RIM/Apple partnership is Canaccord Capital Inc. analyst Peter Misek, who correctly predicted RIM's integration of Intel technology into the BlackBerry last year, giving his latest suggestion credibility in the minds of many.
I think we are going to see many more rumours like this, and some will certainly become a reality as the handheld space continues to heat up the latest battle field for the tech giants. The end result of which will be less choice, but hopefully—better devices.

ASUS P525 Packs A Lot, Just Not 3G

By James Alan Miller
June 1, 2006

At 3GSM in February an unannounced ASUS smartphone, the P305 - based on the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, made the rounds.
Today, the electronics vendor officially announced a new Pocket PC Phone, the P525, that's definitely not going to be confused with that handset model.
Most notably, because the P525, unlike the P305, omits the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) 3G technology used in most of European markets and by Cingular in the United States.

Samsung shows off 1.98-inch VGA display

By Paul Miller
June 7, 2006

Seems like every time we turn around somebody is doing an LCD smaller or bigger or thinner or bendier. In this case we have Samsung doing an LCD just plain awesomer, managing to squeeze a 640 x 480 resolution into a mere 1.98-inch panel.
Samsung is saying the display is the first of its kind, and is targeting it for use in cellphones. Beyond the resolution, the display is rated at a plentifully bright 250 nits, decent 300:1 contrast ratio, and lovable 16 million colors.
No word on when we'll see this in phones, but we'll sure be there with a drool bucket when one drops.

Will Mobile IM Win Out Over SMS?

Without interoperability, traditional mobile operators may lose out on big money as instant messaging's popularity overtakes text messaging.

Analysts have warned that mobile operators may fail to capitalise on the full benefits of instant messaging, which has the potential to overtake text messaging in popularity in the mobile space.
Ovum's John Delaney told delegates at the Global Messaging Congress in London: "The main replacement for SMS will be mobile IM."

Reactions to Samsung's Q1 Ultra Mobile PC
By Barry Levine
May 28, 2006

The Samsung Q1 is in a "1 kilogram wasteland," said Leif-Olof Wallin, an analyst at Gartner, a technology research firm. He said it's "too big to put into your pocket and too small to do some real work on." But not all the comments about the Q1 have been so negative.

In-Flight, Online
By Roy Mark
June 6, 2006

Web surfing may soon become as common as boredom on airline flights.
JetBlue Airways and AirCell, a Colorado-based technology firm, are betting on it after the two won air-to-ground spectrum licenses in an auction concluded Friday by the Federal Commissions Commission (FCC).
After almost a month of bidding in the auction, JetBlue won 1 MHz of spectrum for $7 million while AirCell of Louisville, Colo., took home 3 MHz for $31.3 million.
The deals are still subject to final FCC approval.

MP3 vs. WMA: What One is Best for You?
By Jason Dunn
June 9, 2006

In previous posts I’ve talked about bit rate and compression as they relate to Windows Media Audio (WMA) and MP3 files, so here’s where it comes together into and becomes useful. A common misconception I run into very frequently on this subject is people who say “WMA files are half the size of MP3 files”. That’s only true if the WMA file is half the bit rate of the MP3. Confused? Here’s the breakdown.

One of the advantages that WMA, OGG, and other modern audio formats have is that they have more efficient compression models - meaning they do a better job of retaining song quality with less data. If you were to rip a song from a CD to a 64kbps WMA and a 64kbps MP3, the WMA would sound significantly better because it’s more effective at removing data from the song while still retaining what matters.

Comparison of RIM Blackberry 4.0 and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP
By Raphael Salgado
June 7, 2006

"Wipro Technologies, a leader in the IT services and consulting industry, conducted a comparative lab based study of mobile platforms by benchmarking the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) coupled with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 solution against the RIM Blackberry Handheld 4.0 and Blackberry Enterprise Server 4.0. Wipro conducted detailed testing of both environments in a simulated production environment and extrapolated the efforts and costs obtained from the lab environment to project the total cost of ownership (TCO) of managing each mobile platform in an enterprise production setting."

Sprint Starts Carrying Broadband BlackBerry
By James Alan Miller
May 31, 2006

Sprint today became the fourth North American carrier, after Alltel, Verizon Wireless and Canada's TELUS Wireless to offer the BlackBerry 7130e, which is the first edition of Research In Motion's (RIM) Blackberry 7100 series to support high-speed (Evolution Data Optimized) networking.
That means it is compatible with 3G networks from Sprint, Verizon and TELUS for data transfer rates between 400 to 700 Kbps, with bursts up to 2 Mbps. The net result should be the faster delivery of mobile content-messages, video, pictures, games, audio, etc.-and other services, which boost ARPU (average revenue per user) for carriers over traditional voice products and performance for consumers.

Microsoft Touts Exchange 2007's Mobility Features
By Elizabeth Montalbano
June 12, 2006

BOSTON-- Microsoft today showed off new mobility features that will be available in Exchange Server 2007, the next version of the company's e-mail and messaging software.
The forthcoming update improves e-mail searches on mobile devices, allowing users to search through a greater number of e-mails on mobile devices than they can right now, said Megan Kidd, group product manager for Exchange 2007, at the company's TechEd conference here.
The new software also will allow a remote user to wipe all Exchange Server-fed data from a device if it is lost or stolen. Currently, only someone with Exchange Server administrator privileges can do this.
