Panasonic, NEC unveil 9 Linux phones
By Tarmo Virki April 16, 2009
BARCELONA (Reuters) -
NEC and Panasonic will unveil on Monday nine new cell phone models running the open-source LiMo operating system, wireless Linux foundation LiMo said at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.
The focus of the cell phone market has been shifting to software development since Google and Apple entered the mobile market in the past two years, with phone vendors and operators increasingly looking for open source alternatives like LiMo to cut costs.
The market for software platforms on cell phones is led by Nokia's Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last year to Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

Flick Software launches iPhone©/iTouch© support for the Mobile Interactive Guide
April, 2009
Flick Software today announces the availability of its leading Mobile Interactive Guide software for the highly popular iPhone© platform. This marks a key milestone for our solution which has predominantly been only a Windows CE© and Windows Mobile© solution. “We have always designed the product to be pushed across multiple platforms but until the arrival of the iPhone©, no other platform was offering a reasonable alternative” says Jason Flick President of Flick Software. “This helps us toward our long term goal when any user can easily download our client and have a great experience at any venue - but we realize that is still a few years away”.
This product leverages both local and server-based content and is fully integrated with the content server. The content can be synced over Wifi or via desktop USB links and has been tested for both iPhone© and iTouch© products. This gives Flick Software customers the choice of GPS and real-time communications with the iPhone©, or the more cost effective iTouch©, with its much larger on-device memory for less.

New Palm Pre apps underscore Apple's iPhone limitations
By Aidan Malley April 4, 2009
At Sprint's press lounge during the CTIA Wireless Association's annual event, Palm stressed the advantages of the new webOS platform at the heart of the Pre by running presentations of carefully selected third-party software live on sample phones.
The most advanced was Pandora's Internet radio app. On an iPhone OS device, the music service is partly neutered by Apple's refusal to allow true background tasks, preventing users from listening to streams while they run other chores; on the Palm Pre, Pandora not only runs in the background but hooks into the always-on notification bar to let listeners approve or dismiss songs without having to even switch active tasks.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Palm also underlined Apple's refusal to permit interpreting code within tjhird-party apps by showcasing an emulator that does just this. Mobile software developer MotionApps released an app known as Classic that, much as with Apple's own Classic that was present in Mac OS X until Leopard, recreates the entire working environment for an older operating system. In the case of webOS, it lets Pre users run PalmOS apps near full speed and as just one of any other, native apps that can be running at the same time.
