Note from Jason Flick

The operating system war is heating up again in the mobile world.  Microsoft is re-asserting itself in the larger form factor space with an entirely new initiative called Origami (backed by Intel, Samsung and others) which is a cross between a PDA and a tablet.  Linux is gaining ground with support from Nokia and Palm Source and ASIA is creating an entire culture around Linux-based smart phones.  The big unknown is still whether or not Microsoft will be able to do what it did in the PDA space for smart phones.  In the end, users saw PDAs as an extension to their desktops and Microsoft owned the desktop. Playing that card won’t work for Smartphones as the Blackberry has proven that a completely stand alone device delivers strong value for the enterprise. So the warning for enterprises deploying mobile software is to be ever-vigilant when choosing your platform.

Mobile workforce tapping unified messaging systems

By Ann Bednarz
March 15, 2006

Aging voicemail systems, increasing interest in IP telephony, and a surge in the mobile workforce are driving companies to consider unified messaging - a technology that has long fallen short of industry expectations.
Unified messaging products are designed to streamline the way end users manage their phone, fax and e-mail messages. With unified messaging, users can open, sort and archive voicemail messages from their e-mail interface, for example, or listen to an e-mail message from a telephone.

Mobile Device Security III: Employee-Owned Device Risks
You've seen them in the lunchroom, by the water cooler, and in the conference rooms. They're small, colorful, powerful, and maybe even sexy. And they help us stay connected and up to date all the time. Yes, I'm talking about employee-owned PDAs and smartphones.
Employees are excited to bring their device to work and synch to the network. Synching means they can work remotely; checking corporate e-mail, documents, and contact lists from their PDA or smartphone while at home, at a customer site, or in their car.

March 13, 2006

T-Mobile's new smartphone, called the Smart Digital Assistant, or SDA for short, is designed to keep you connected in every way possible.
In addition to behaving like a regular mobile phone, the SDA can connect to the Internet through local Wi-Fi hotspots and through high-speed EDGE networks.
Measuring 4.53 x 1.82 x 0.69 inches and weighing 3.74 ounces, the silver T-Mobile SDA is smaller than the typical smartphone and can fit comfortably in a pocket.

Switched On: Origami is a paper tiger for now
By Ryan Block
March 15, 2006

In its unending capitalistic quest, Microsoft is determined to figure out how to sell people their nth computer. Today, its ideal consumer's computing inventory looks something like this - a couple of desktops around the home, a notebook for those mobile jaunts, a Media Center PC for controlling the television experience serving up Windows Media files to an Xbox 360 or lesser Media Center Extenders, and at least a Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smartphone device.
That could leave an unacceptable seven minutes and 34 seconds during waking hours when you don't have a Windows license at your wallet-handling fingertips. What about all the times when a 2-pound ultraportable notebook is too much but a PDA isn't enough? If the year-old Origami video preceding the release of the Ultra Mobile PC from Microsoft and Intel is any indication, there aren't too many of them.
