Note from Jason Flick
First Apple added to the mobile platform mix—or, I should say,
will be adding to the platform mix—as the device has still not passed government
approval. And now Sun, whose java platform has been successful on only a few
mobile OS’s, is taking a new approach to the highly sought after mobile market
with Java FX. It is a mobile kernel they acquired through SavaJe, and is
targeted initially at dislodging Adobe’s dominant Flash. With developers only
getting a peek at it this week, it will be awhile before we know how successful
an effort this will be. I still feel this is only the beginning of the mobile
software platform war, as there are a few more combatants still to come.

Cheers,
Jason Flick, President Flick Software

P1 is more phone than PDA

By Tony Dennis May 9, 2007
BILLED AS the latest addition to its P Series handsets, the latest P1
from Sony Ericsson is much more of a real mobile phone than a PDA with wireless
communications built in. Its 25 per cent smaller than the P990 and just feels
like a real handset.
Sony Ericsson hasn't skimped when it comes to cramming capabilities into such
a small package. Not only is it a 3G and GSM phone, it also supports Wi-fi
(802.11b) too. Plus the version we saw actually has Internet telephony built in.
Other communications features include Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and infra-red. The
latter might be a tad old fashioned these days but it can be much faster
than using Bluetooth in certain circumstances.

Nokia Joins 'Mobile Wallet' Initiative
By Barry Levine April 26, 2007

Nokia is joining the GSM Association's "mobile wallet"
initiative, which seeks to create a global standard based on an embedded,
wireless chip in a cell phone that allows a user to pay for something simply by
waving the phone over a wireless reader. Nokia joins others in the GSM
Association, including AT&T, China Mobile, and NTT DoCoMo.
If a growing consortium of cell-phone makers and operators is successful, users
throughout the world will someday be able to forget their wallet as well.

Review: Sony Ericsson's W880 9.5mm Thick Walkman Phone
By Michael Oryl May 4, 2007
At this point in time, most mobile phone enthusiasts are fully
aware of Sony Ericsson's Walkman line of music phones. You might even say that
the company is known for them by now. What they have never been known for,
however, is thin phones. Ever since the launch of the Motorola RAZR that seems
like so many years ago, many of the manufacturers - particularly Samsung - have
been racing to produce thin handsets. Sony Ericsson just kept chugging along
putting out solid, and well tested, designs.
Sporting a bold,
sexy, and, for the first time, thin design, it appears that Sony Ericsson W880
is finally ready to move the company into the thin-is-in game.

The Wonderful Wireless Widget World
By Brad Smith May 1, 2007
Those little applications used on the Internet to get personalized information are finding their way into the mobile industry.
Wireless telecommunications service providers have been talking for the last
few years about the importance of personalization and now they may have found a
new key to offering that experience by taking a page from the broad Internet.
Widgets, those tiny applications that run on Web pages, may make it much easier
to give mobile phone users the kind of information they want.
Mobile widgets and their cousin technology RSS (real simple syndication) have
become a hot topic in the industry this year, perhaps stirred up when Microsoft
spun off its mobile widget software into a new company called ZenZui. The
software giant isn’t alone, though, with companies old and new offering some
form of widgetry. Among them are Openwave Systems, Flurry, Callwave, Nokia,
Opera and Mobio Networks. Some want to work with the operators, and others have
an off-portal strategy.

Sun makes Java mobile triple play
By Gavin Clarke May 8, 2007
Sun Microsystems is today expected to launch a media platform targeting
consumer devices, pitting itself against Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe
Systems.
Sun plans to raise the curtain on its annual JavaOne conference by releasing
the Java FX Script scripting language and Java FX family, consisting of a kernel
and libraries optimized for resource-constrained devices like mobile phones and
set-top boxes running Java.
Java FX Mobile is due first, with Sun announcing early developer access at
Tuesday's show. Java FX Mobile is based on intellectual property Sun bought from
SavaJe last month. Tools for Java FX will slot into NetBeans.
Not only should the Java FX combo mitigate the need for Microsoft's Windows
Media Player for Smartphones, Apple's QuickTime, and Adobe's Flash, but also
potentially negate content creation tools from all three vendors, according to
Sun.
Sun claims Java FX Script will let developers build and easily deploy content
to the Java FX runtime using scripting, bridging the divide between application
developers and content creators who currently use different tools. According to
Sun, Java FX executes byte code inside the Java Edition Runtime Environment
(JRE) on any device running Java Standard Edition (Java SE).
Microsoft made similar noises last week as it released to beta the
Silverlight media player and launched the Expression web and content tools,
aimed at Adobe.

Samsung Enlists WiMAX in the Army April
30, 2007
Samsung Electronics says that it is providing Mobile WiMAX technologies to
the U.S. Army's Communications Electronics Research & Development
Engineering Center (CERDEC), so that the army might evaluate the usability of
the technology in a military environment. Engineers at CERDEC will test the
performance of mobile WiMAX compared to fixed networks in an environment of both
mobile users and mobile base stations.
Over the next few months, Samsung and the Army's CERDEC engineers will test
WiMAX at the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence,
Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) On-The-Move (OTM) testing facility
located at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.
"Mobile WiMAX brings a variety of opportunities in the way people
communicate. We are very excited to provide and introduce Mobile WiMAX
technology to the U.S. Army, who could have a variety of unique
implementations," Kwansoo Lee, executive vice president of Samsung's
telecommunications systems division said in a statement. "Mobile WiMAX continues
to expand globally - and Samsung will, at every step of the way, open new doors
of opportunity."
